Choosing an Effective Treatment for Yeast Infection

Before beginning any treatment for yeast infection on your own, it is important that you consult your healthcare professional. The reasons for this are two-fold. First, many women mistakenly think they have a yeast infection, when in fact they have some other type of infection. If this is the case, the chances that the over the counter or homes remedy will be effective on the actual problem are not good. Plus, you lose valuable time in getting an effective treatment for the actual ailment. The second reason you should talk to your doctor before embarking on self-medication is that you may not fully understand the severity of the infection and could under medicate your condition. A doctor will be able to verify exactly what type of infection you have and make sure the treatment is adequate.

Typically speaking, a doctor prescribed treatment for yeast infection will either be in the form of a topical or oral medication. Topical medications usually are in the form of a cream or lotion that is to be applied to the infection two or more times a day. Depending on the severity of the infection, your doctor may recommend an over the counter product that will be strong enough to clear up the infection. A more advanced case will most likely require a topical solution that is only available by prescription.

An oral medication as a treatment for yeast infection is also common. Perhaps the most attractive thing about the oral medication is that it is easy to take and does not require the time involved in applying a topical ointment. However, it should be understood that oral medications usually come with higher risks of side effects. Your doctor can advise you of the potential side effects, should you be interested in the oral medication. Another factor to keep in mind is that oral medications tend to not work quite as quickly as the topical medications, which are after all applied directly to the infected area.

Determining the right treatment for yeast infection is a matter that you and your doctor will be able to settle on very quickly, which means your treatments should result in positive results in very little time.
